What is domain propagation?

DNS propagation defines the process of updating information across the internet. When you make changes to your domain's DNS settings, those changes need to spread to DNS servers worldwide.

Types of DNS propagation

There are two forms of DNS propagation:

1. DNS Zone Changes

  • Changes made to your DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, etc.)
  • Usually affects only a few servers
  • This is the fastest type of change
  • Typically propagates within 1-24 hours

2. WHOIS Information Changes

  • Changes to domain registration information
  • Affects domain ownership details
  • Can take up to 72 hours to propagate
  • Includes nameserver changes at the registrar level

Domain registration and transfers

After the order of a domain or transfer of a domain, there will be a period where you can't see your domain. This is due to millions of servers having to update with the new information.

Important: Your website may not be visible for up to 48 hours during initial domain setup or transfer.

Factors affecting propagation speed

  • TTL (Time To Live) - Lower TTL values propagate faster
  • Type of change - DNS records vs WHOIS updates
  • Geographic location - Some regions update faster
  • ISP caching policies - Different providers cache differently

How to check propagation status

You can check if your changes have propagated using:

  • Ping command - ping yourdomain.com
  • Online tools - whatsmydns.net
  • WHOIS lookup - For registration information changes
  • DNS checkers - Multiple location testing tools

During propagation

While propagation is happening:

  • Some users may see the old site, others the new
  • Email may be delivered to old or new servers
  • DNS lookups may return different results
  • This is normal and temporary
