“GEO” Doesn’t Exist: Stop Falling for the Hype

"GEO" is just another trendy acronym. Everything still revolves around SEO. You need quality and consistency in your strategy — not fake news.

A new acronym appears out of nowhere, offering magical promises:

“If you don’t optimize for GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), your site won’t appear in AI-generated responses.”

Here’s the problem with this pitch: it’s simply not true. GEO is just a new label for an old need: combatting digital irrelevance. The difference is that now, many agencies are using “AI” as a weapon of fear to sell services without actually redefining their methods.

What Does Google Say?

In July 2025, as Search Engine Roundtable reported, Google’s Gary Illyes was asked at a Search Central event how to optimize for Google’s AI-generated summaries (AI Overviews). His answer, later echoed by John Mueller on social media:

“To get your content to appear in AI Overview, simply use normal SEO practices. You don’t need GEO, LLMO or anything else.”

In May 2026, Google put this in its official documentation. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Search states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and therefore still SEO, treating “AEO” and “GEO” as other names for the same thing. The guide also says you don’t need llms.txt files, AI-specific markup, or to chop content into tiny chunks.

If even Google says that AI results use the same foundations as traditional SEO, why create a new acronym?

The Real Opportunity Lies in Using AI

Yes, AI is changing both how people search and how search engines generate results.
No, you don’t need to reinvent your entire content strategy.
Yes, you can (and should) use AI as a tool to accelerate and scale what already works.

What’s actually emerging isn’t a new type of SEO, but a new approach to implementing SEO with AI.

Final Thoughts

The evolution of technology often leads to exaggerated promises from those who try to profit off the confusion.
The acronym GEO is just one example of that — a name that suggests something new, but is, in reality, the same SEO we’ve always worked on, now powered by AI.
